This year marks the 20th Valentine's Day that Helmut and I have had together. On our first Valentine's Day as newlyweds, I was really looking forward to some fantastic romantic gift. Perhaps he would get me some roses delivered to work, or a box of my favorite chocolates, maybe he would plan some incredible date to a restaurant we couldn't really afford. Nope, none of that happened. He did get me a gift, but it was not well received. A waffle maker. I was not happy. What did a waffle maker for our first Valentine's Day really say about his expectations of me. Is that all I was to him? A cook? Someone to cook his meals and wash his laundry? I am sure you can see where that went.
Our Valentine's Days throughout the years have been at every end of the spectrum. When we had small children at home we usually just spent the night at home, maybe watching a video after the kids were all tucked into bed. Last year, we took a trip (just the two of us) to New Orleans. This year, we will leave the kids at home and go out for a four course meal at Mia Bella. I suppose Valentine's Day is like anything else, it has a time and a season and it changes accordingly.
I will leave you with a little conversation Sam and I had the other day (I am sure I will get in trouble for posting this sooner or later). Up until this exchange, I would have sworn up and and down that she had no interest in boys whatsoever...
Sam: Mom, did you ever have a crush when you where my age?
Mom: I am sure I did. Why, do you have a crush?
Sam: Yah, his name is David.
Mom: Is he in your class?
Sam: (aghast) no, thank goodness. I get all shaky when he even comes near me!
So cute!
