A week ago, the postal carrier delivered a small box to our front door. I had no idea what it could be. I wasn't expecting any packages, so this was a total mystery to me. It was from my Grandma Higginbotham. Hmmm, the mystery continued. When I opened up the box, it was full of 2 cameras and a exposure meter. They were owned by my Grandpa Higg and my Great Grandfather Smith. She had seen the pictures of my camera collection on my blog and thought I might like to add these cameras to my collection. I am thrilled to have them! It is so nice to know that I share this love of photography with these great men in my family.
My great-grandfather died when I was quite young, but I do have a few hazy memories of him. I remember stopping by to visit them in Colorado on our way to Utah one summer. I can't remember how old I was but I remember Grandpa Smith sitting in his brown recliner. His legs were so long that it looked like he was sitting in a toddler chair. He was a giant of a man at well over six feet tall.
I do have tons of memories of my Grandpa Higg. We visited them every summer at their home in Twin Falls, Idaho, so I knew him well. My favorite memory is of him coming home from work each afternoon for lunch and to watch his soap operas down in the basement. He and my grandmother were so in love. They always snuggled up and sat close to one another and were constantly holding hands. They were a great example to me of what a happy couple could be like.
This Kodak 35 belonged to my Great-Grandfather Smith. It was manufactured in the late 1930's or early 1940's and features a cool pop up view finder. It was used with this DeJur Exposure Meter.
This Kodak Signet 35 belonged to my Grandpa Higg. It was manufactured in the early 1950's. It is a super study camera made of thick aluminum casting. The most interesting features to me are the sliders on the back, allowing you to adjust for shutter speed, lighting conditions and film speed.
Thanks for the cameras, Grandma. I love them! They are proudly displayed in my living room with the rest of my collection.
Cool!
